Rugby/Drop/Twickenham/England match. Double color canvas fro - Lot 400
Rugby/Drop/Twickenham/England match. Double color canvas from "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News", February 23, 1929. In this painting by the Scottish master illustrator W.R.S. Stott (1878-1939), we are among the 60,000 spectators at Twickenham, not far from the Duke of York, at the exit of a rare English scrum under the Irish posts. The English number 3 slams a drop-goal. Helmeted or not, all the players and the Welsh referee Mr. Freethy follow the trajectory of the ball. It will pass by, and Ireland which nicely dominated the game will triumph by 6 to 5 (2 E to 1). The Scotland dear to Stott will win this tournament. Traces of the center fold, as well as the staples, but superb nevertheless. 31X48. Everything is there, when for a moment, a drop freezes time. Decorative.
