CANAL DU MIDI. Victor Maurice de RIQUET DE CARAMAN (Paris 17 - Lot 140
CANAL DU MIDI. Victor Maurice de RIQUET DE CARAMAN (Paris 1727-1807) General Officer, Friend of Marie-Antoinette. Descendant of Pierre Paul RIQUET, builder of the Canal du Midi. One of the main owners of the Canal. He had planted in ROISSY, an English park - Letter signed by the Count of CARAMAN, to Mr GOEFFROY (Controller of the Canal in Toulouse), from ROISSY (Château de CARAMANS in ROISSY-EN-FRANCE (Val d'Oise) on August 5, 1773: "Nothing is wiser, Sir, than the various tests that Mr. GARIPUY has proposed to you for the painting of the lock gates; Thus you will do very well to paint one with two layers of fatty oil, one of white and one green on top, and to try another in bray, tarred like the Dutch vessels: One will then observe the effect which will result from it to be fixed in the future. It seems that Mr. de BONREPOS is determined to postpone the alignment of the Pont St Sauveur until next year. It is not necessary to give the Canal the same width as the in-between banks, if there were some inconvenience. One could end these benches by two curves which would join the alignment of the Canal. Please let me know the progress of your work during the summer; It is an opportunity to show us your talents and to put us within reach of knowing more particularly your progress..." 2 pages large in-8°.
