MORBIHAN. 1795. PORT OF LORIENT. Interesting letter written - Lot 228
MORBIHAN. 1795. PORT OF LORIENT. Interesting letter written from LORIENT on 24 Messidor year 3 (12 July 1795) signed "RD" addressed to Citizen LAPEYRE Director of the Post Office in Montauban. 2 pages in-folio. "The English, My dear Comrade, always continue their joke, yesterday they cannoned the Forts of Port Liberté. Their cannonballs did not carry, three of their ships, in the evening, passed into the roadstead of Cros. The forts fired on them and did nothing to them. Since the morning until the evening, we have been bickering with them on the Quiberon side. I do not know what the result will be. I particularly believe that we will make them dance. They tried another descent on the side of the river of Aurai with a number of 4000 men, but they did not expect the embassy of 7000 of ours who received them with the Bayonnette in their backs so that their enterprise had no success. Their army, numbering 60 sails, appeared here yesterday. Their intention is to make a diversion to try to reduce our forces... MORLAIX 3 Thermidor Year 3. The letter of which the copy is above was written by an Officer of the 141st ½ brigade that I know perfectly. Yesterday evening there arrived a Citizen of this commune coming from Brest, who was there the 1st current. Report that the Representatives of the People had the Show interrupted to communicate to the public a letter from General HOCHE, who announced that he had seized Fort Penthièvre, killed 3,000 Emigrants (royalists) and taken 5 pieces of cannon (Fort Penthièvre is located at the entrance of the Quiberon peninsula on the landward side). This same individual announced to us that the English had seized a ship of 700 tons, loaded with flour for us. It is also rumored that CHARRETTE at the head of his army has resumed hostilities. His troop is said to be well armed, he intercepted a convoy... his army never surrendered..."
