The favor of Mme de MAINTENON had procured the Ministry to CHAMILLARD, who showed a boundless incapacity there. Louis XIV, who had a great affection for him, was obliged to give in to public opinion; he withdrew the office of Controller General (February 1708) and then that of Secretary of State for War (June 1709), and granted him a pension of 60,000 livres.
