LA MOTHE-FÉNELON (Gabriel-Jacques DE SALIGNAC, Marquis de) G - Lot 126
LA MOTHE-FÉNELON (Gabriel-Jacques DE SALIGNAC, Marquis de) General and Diplomat, nephew of the Archbishop of CAMBRAI (born in 1688 - Killed at the Battle of ROCOUX Oct. 11, 1746.) He was Minister Plenipotentiary at the Congress of SOISSONS 1727, and Ambassador to Holland 1733. It is him who gave the first complete Edition of the Adventures of Telemachus, 1717 - Letter A.S. the Marquis de FÉNELON, in AIX (13) on March 17, addressed to M. de BAUDRIEUX in THIBERVILLE near LISIEUX in Normandy. 3pp in-4°: ". I asked you for sixteen hundred francs for the job you want for Mr. Your garlic, that it was not susceptible of any reduction. If I were a man to take advantage of the Companies and Jobs of my Regiment, one could be in the case of haggling with me... my reputation on that is established... I am always a little surprised when I see myself in the case of being haggled over for things in which I take no other interest than that of the good that I seek to procure. When Your son leaves the service, he will be very happy and so will you, Sir, that the lieutenancy that he will make will provide him with an increase in funding for his retirement.
