Paul, 1687, ORIGINAL EDITION, pt. in-12, dark brown half calf, pink and white marbled paper boards, fillets - dotted - fleurons - author - title and date in gilt Roman numerals on spine with 4 nerves and two false nerves, combed multicolor marbled paper endpapers, professionally rebound but without name of the bookbinder (19th century pastiche done in the 20th century), untrimmed, (XX) - 358 - (4) pp. (error in pagination at the level of pages but also in the table of contents - 8 more pages must be added!), headbands, lettering and endpapers, frontispiece "Chinese gathering flowers and drinking tea liquor" with the 12 plates out of text engraved by Jean Hainzelman, that is to say 14 plates in all including the duplicate!The book includes: "Epitre à Messieurs les docteurs de la Cour et de Paris", Avertissement, Avis, Approbation de monsieur Falconnet, conseiller médecin ordinaire du Roy (Lyon le 18 juin 1686), Extrait du privilège du Roy (Versailles le 26 juin 1686) donnant autorisation à Thomas Amaulry, marchand-libraire à Lyon d'imprimer cet ouvrage, table des chapitres, ref. Vicaire 97. The author, Nicolas de Blégny (1643 - 1722) was a "curious character who can be classed as a charlatan" (see Gérard Oberlé's notice). He was the former "Royal Physician" of Louis XIV. Between 1693 and 1700, he spent 7 years in prison. After his release, he retired to Lyon where he died in 1722. This remarkable book on the use of tea, coffee and chocolate, both from a medical and a gastronomic point of view, is divided into four parts and numerous sub-chapters: 1. on the nature, properties and use of tea (pp. 1-86): 1. on the external form of tea, the places where it is grown, its different names; 2. on the choice of different prices for tea; 3. on the particular nature of tea; 4. The different ways of taking tea; 5. The particular virtues of tea; 6. The syrup of febrifuge tea. Part Two: On the nature, properties, and proper use of Caffe (pp. 87-191): 1. On the places where Caffe is grown, its form, and its different names; 2. On the nature of Caffe; 3. On the selection, roasting, and price of Caffe seed; 4. Of the choice, the preparation, the price of the powder or flour of Caffé; 5. Of the preparation of the tincture or drink of Caffè, of its use in general; 6. Medical preparations of caffeine; 7. Of the particulate properties of the drink of Caffè. Part III: Treating of the nature, properties and proper use of Chocolate (pp. 192-300): 1. of Chocolate in general; 2. of Cocoa, and of Sugar in particular; 3. of the ingredients which the Americans added to Sugar, to Cocoa, in the composition of their Chocolate, before the discovery of their continent; 4. Of the reformation of the form of the Indians concerning the coposition of Chocolate; 5. Of the composition of the Chocolate; 6. The sophistication of the choice, preservation and price of chocolate; 7. The drink or beverage of Chocolate; 8. The properties of chocolate; 9. Vanilla syrup; 10. Anti-venereal chocolate. Part Four: Containing the explanation of the Figures included in the preceding parts, some remarks on the singularities of new invention, relative to the same subject (pp.301-357): 1. Of the Figures of the first Part; 2. Of the Figures of the second Part; 3. Of the Figures of the third Part; 4. Of the goods which are at present dispensed by the Artists to the Royal Laboritory of the four nations; 5. Des Cassolettes Royalles nouvellement inventées par l'Autheur. Very beautiful binding highlighting this work of an EXTREME RARETE. Very good condition of both the binding and the paper, some minor soiling but without impact on the text and engravings.
