L. S. R. (LE SIEUR ROBERT ou LE SIEUR ROLLAND): The art of t - Lot 149
L. S. R. (LE SIEUR ROBERT ou LE SIEUR ROLLAND): The art of treating well, divided into three parts. A new, curious, and very gallant work, useful to all persons, and conditions. Luzarches, ed. Robert Morcrette, November 15, 1978, reprint of the 1674 edition in Paris by Jean du Puis, large in-12, full blue morocco grain sheep, gilt edges, spine ribbed, gilt boards reproducing the copy with the arms of Louis XIV, interior garlands, (2) - 413 - (2) - (8 bl.) pp, cream paper, headbands, lettering and endpapers, foreword, preface, table of contents, king's privilege, ref. Vicar 43 + 891. A superb facsimile of the original edition of the utmost rarity. Nothing precise is known about Sieur Robert. "This enigmatic character is however the author of the most representative book of the revival of French cuisine in the classical age. Even if he criticizes the archaisms, gueuseries and disgusting lessons of the French cook, Robert does not so much upset the innovations of La Varenne as he radicalizes and systematizes them. All these choices also tend to respect the true taste of things, in the search for a refined simplicity, henceforth assimilated to true delicacy in cooking and makes the culinary art one of the places where the politeness of manners is tested", this one, shared between the two booksellers Jean Du Puys and Frédéric Léonard, and a Lyonnaise re-edition of 1693. One of the rarest cookbooks of the 17th century reprinted in only 250 copies. A nice copy.
