MICHEL, Francisque - FOURNIER, Edouard: Le livre d'or des métiers. History of hotels, cabarets, hotels garnis, restaurants and cafés, and of the old communities and brotherhoods of hoteliers, wine merchants, restaurant owners, and lemonade makers. Volume 1 and 2. Paris, éd. Librairie Historique, Archéologique et scientifique de Seré, 1851, ORIGINAL EDITION, 2 volumes gd. In-8, burgundy half morocco, spine with 5 nerves with gilt title and tomaison as well as double gilt fillets in each box, dark brown and yellow marbled paper boards, period binding, 348 - X - 410 pp. with marbled edges, the two frontispieces (German Cabaret XVIIth century) are identical in both volumes, 31 plates in black out of text (including 6 on double page), that is to say a total of 32 plates of which 31 are different, 11 chapter headings and endpapers in black, tables of contents. Remarkable study on the history of cabarets and hostelries which still remains today the most important collection on the subject. The plates, either in black or in color, are taken from "La Grande Bohème" which is not an integral part of this collection. However, the copies with the engravings are more sought after! RARE and Sought after. Very good condition of the binding; scattered foxing, more marked in volume 2
