Exceptional collection of documents from the archives of Georges VICAIRE sold at Drouot in 1922-23, and found in an attic very recently. The set has been placed in a red canvas box with compartments forming a beautiful contemporary case for this set. 1/Back of the publisher's handwritten envelope to Vicaire; 2/4 folding plates with the illustrated plates; 3/Newspaper articles dating from October 18, 1890 when the book was first published, with handwritten notes by Vicaire; 4/"Introduction du rôti-cochon" in sheet with handwritten corrections by Vicaire; 5/"Introduction du rôti-cochon" in sheet before corrections by Vicaire; 6/Idem, after corrections by Vicaire; 7/Set of letters exchanged between Vicaire and his publisher Pigelet; 8/Smokes of Roti-cochon and of the "Civilité puérile et morale". Morgand and for the Société des Bibliophiles François (following the copy printed in Dijon by Claude Michard in 1696), 1890, copy no. 144/300 on Van Gelder paper (the first 30 are on Hollande paper), pt. in-8, orange cloth boards, dark brown morocco title-piece with title, gilt fillets and garlands as well as the date of edition at the bottom of the smooth spine, gilt headband, untrimmed for the body and foot edges (large margins), period binding, original cover preserved, XXXI - (1 bl.) - 35 - (1) - 36 - (2) pp, 1 vignette "L. Auguste de Thou" on the title page and on the first cover, headbands, lettering, endpapers, many black engravings in text, list of members of the Société des Bibliophiles françois, whose honorary president is the Duke of Aumale and the president is none other than Baron Jérôme Pichon, introduction by Georges Vicaire, title page of the 1696 edition, Avertissemements, Oraisons, "Civilité puerile et morale". A very nice reprint of this great 17th century classic, whose purpose was to teach reading in Latin and French. Almost all the examples given refer to food and cooking! Many beautiful engravings very explicit! Beautiful presentation by the biographer Georges Vicaire. Very limited edition of 330 copies, ours being number 144 on Van Gelder paper. This book has become very RARE and Sought after. It is in a very good condition, both of paper and binding. Nice copy.
