Henri Laurens, 1891, ORIGINAL EDITION, expl. n° VI / 30 expl. on Japon, only large paper, printed for André Ferroud (1849 - 1921), French publisher who founded in 1878 (at 210 bld Saint-Germain) in Paris "la Librairie des Amateurs", in-4 (21 x 28,5 cm), half morocco with gds. corners with author - title gilt on two very strong nerves as well as nets in black, decoration of brown and red rectangles in prolongation of the spine, plates marbled paper in the browns, gilt edge of head, complete original cover preserved, the binding is of time and of inspiration "Art déco" realized by Franz OSTERMANN, the cover is illustrated in color by Gustave FRAIPONT, XVI - 296 pp, 16 full-page color plates and 113 black illustrations by Gustave FRAIPONT, preface by Baron Oscar de Watteville, proof of printing, very good bibliography, table of contents. Charles Spire Blondel (1836 - 1900) is known as an art writer. He participated in particular in La revue des Beaux-arts, from 1860, and from 1878 in the Dictionnaire encyclopédique et biographique de l'industrie et des arts. He is also the author of several works on the borderline between arts, technique and savoir-vivre.Very good work on the history, culture and preparation of tobacco in all its forms: smoking tobacco, pipe, cigar and cigarette and snuff and on the snuffbox. The last chapter is devoted to the "pros and cons", on the disadvantages and advantages of tobacco. Very nice binding by Franz Ostermann (184. - 1938), French bookbinder of Alsatian origin, signing his bindings by his first name only. He came to Paris after 1870 where he founded his workshop (1872) at 80 bld Malesherbes then at 28 rue Ampère in 1902. Very nice illustration by Gustave Fraipont (1849 - ?), Belgian painter and engraver. The plates out of text are present in two forms, in color and in black. One of the very RARE large paper on Japan (30 copies). Very good condition of the binding; the cover, the pre-title page and the last page of the table of contents show some scattered foxing. The body of the book and the color engravings are very sound, without any foxing or soiling.
