Cycling/Ellegaard/Antwerp/Sprint. Original lithographed post - Lot 93
Cycling/Ellegaard/Antwerp/Sprint. Original lithographed poster: "Vélodrome d'Anvers (Zurenborg, Sunday August 9 and Tuesday August 11 (1903), GRAND PRIX D'ANVERS, organisé avec le concours du Sport Cycliste Anversois, 8000f de prix, tribune A, 5f,...". Attention marvel, and high curiosity. This 1903 (not 1898) image, monogrammed LP (Livemont-Privat ???), was also used to advertise the Bol d'or in September 1903. Why was this? Because with this fabulous family of free-riders at the velodrome, "peering" across the boards, we have the eternal image to promote meetings on the track... The elegant woman in the red dress and black hat is flanked by her son in a sailor collar, who has lost his boater in the rush, and her little daughter, whose hock is barely visible, so much so does she resemble a cabbage with whipped cream. It's Sunday, and behind the balustrades on this fine August weekend, there are three thousand people watching the eight series of the GP d'Anvers... As the clever labels indicate, the line-up is top-notch, with double Danish world champion Ellegaard, the man in the large-checkered jersey, along with Schilling, Grogna, Piard, Rutt, Mayer, Schilling, Jue, Kimble, or Nicolaïwitch....It would take two days to reach the final victory of the Danish greyhound (1877-1954), who would go on to become world champion once again, before going on to become the greatest Danish champion in history...And of course, the starting labels were changed, with the Dutchman Harrie Meyers second and Bixio, 3rd, Del Rosso 4th, Kimble, 5th.Grogra and Poulain, 7th...A view of the velodrome from this angle is perfectly original and full of joy, with a hint of forbidden fruit...This marvelous print by Ratinckx is validated by two revenue stamps...83x120. TBE. Slight mismatch between the two panels, not at all distracting.
