Cycling/Thys/VCL/Tour 1914/Peugeot/Yellow Jersey. Superb lit - Lot 137
Cycling/Thys/VCL/Tour 1914/Peugeot/Yellow Jersey. Superb lithographed poster: "Cycles Philippe THYS, Tour de France type, perfect on Dunlop tires...". Color photo poster (printed by O.de Rycke, Brussels-Forest). Yes, the Belgian Thys (1890-1971) is the TYPE rider of the Tour, and his yellow-and-blue machine sports the colors of his trademark Peugeot jerseys. Over the 5,500 km of the Tour, Thys was like a fish in water, as evidenced by the fact that he was the first champion to win four Tours: the Tour Indépendant Peugeot in 1911, and the Tours 1913,14, 20. As an independent, he also won Paris-Turin and Paris-Toulouse in 1911... Among the pros, he added the Tour of Lombardy and Paris-Tours in 1917. Magically molded in the eternal black and white jersey of the Vélo-Club de Levallois, he defies time. A small detail: "le basset" was against the use of derailleurs, because he considered "that a rider couldn't be better at 35 than at 25..." (sic). (sic) Contrary to what has sometimes been written, he was not the first wearer of the yellow jersey in 1913, the confusion may be due to the fact that the Peugeot jersey of the time was yellow and...blue. 78x58. TBE. Three inked tax stamps.
