Paume/Pallone/Pelote. Superb colored woodcut: "Partie de Pallone, place des 4 Fontaines à Rome...". By Pinelli, 1835. A very fine composition, reminiscent of the fever of 1814 (pediment)... The French army is on the lookout, the game is hotly contested, the three players, pallone (a kind of wooden bracelet racket with serrations on the wrist) in fist, thrill a disparate but passionate crowd, with bourgeois in top hats, clergy, workers, perhaps a judge (seated), and in any case, a stealthy young ball boy (right).
