Pelote Basque/Guéthary/Mer/Montagne. Superb poster celebrati - Lot 302
Pelote Basque/Guéthary/Mer/Montagne. Superb poster celebrating Basque pelota, played in summer and winter, by the sea or in the mountains: "Chemin de fer du Midi, Guéthary, Basses-Pyrénées, Mer et Montagne, Saison d'été et d'hiver...1909...". Yes, the Fronton is indeed the link between the sea and the mountains, and it remains so today, even if the Pyrenees have become Atlantic... This elegant pelotari in espadrilles, beret and cap, superbly holding the chistera glove and pelota, against a red background, which could be that of the pediment, is the ideal liaison between the mountains in the background, and the sea, which has pride of place in the foreground, with its characteristic creatures. A specialist in the Basque country claims that this was the image preferred by Paul-Jean Toulet (1867-1920), the great Basque poet, and even Pierre Loti! In fact, if you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of bullets... Lithograph. 1909. Wrapped in cloth. 112.5 x 75.5cm. TBE. Printer Léon de Rernes Blitz.
