(ALLIER) Family CHABANNES LA PALICE - Letter A.S. "A. DE CHABANNES" written from LA PALICE (Château de) this Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1856 - 4 pages in-8° : "It seems to me that the time of your return to Versailles is approaching, dear Madame, and I have come to thank you for your kind letter from London... I'm not surprised at the impression Jurikenham has made on you, but I'd like to know about Claremont's emotions too. There is that great figure of the Queen there, so striking for the halo of purity and holiness that envelops her... every time I go there it seems to me as if I were crossing the threshold of a temple, a sanctuary,... one would fall to one's knees before the Queen as if at the aspect of a divinity... I'm delighted you've enjoyed England, but I think you'll tire of it in the long run. It's especially the constant bustle of English life that's exhausting... I agree with you about the trees, and if you see ours in Bourbonnais you'll understand my daily groans. They are completely stripped to feed the sheep, and the unfortunates sometimes look like masts of cocagne. In general, they are always tortured in France, where the feeling for landscape art is so rare and where there is so little love for life in the fields. Despite its nakedness, our country has a good side, and I hope to see you there next year..."
