Cycling/Grande Guerre/Deruyter/Bataille/Strasbourg/Steines. - Lot 66
Cycling/Grande Guerre/Deruyter/Bataille/Strasbourg/Steines. Extremely rare photo of the victorious finish in Strasbourg of Belgian Charles Deruyter (1890-1955) in the Circuit des Champs de Bataille (May 11, 1919). This victory is the most important in the Belgian champion's palmares, making it one of the toughest races in history. Held over 7 stages and 1981 km on the former battlefield of the Great War, in abominable conditions, it was overflown by this phenomenon, who triumphed in three stages (!!!), including here the last one in liberated Strasbourg. Cheered on by the poilus, he is to be congratulated by C.W. Herring. With this event, the thread was rekindled with the great pre-war organizations, and the yellow jersey of the renaissance was in the process of maturing. This miraculous organization is due to the "Petit Journal" and its journalists Marcel Allain and Alphonse Steinès. Our press photo, silver print, is signed (stamp) by A.Spick, rue Louis Apfell, Strasbourg (ALS). Small crease in lower left corner (10x15).
