Football/ Ben Barek/ Brantonne/ Diagne. Seven pieces, five o - Lot 147
Football/ Ben Barek/ Brantonne/ Diagne. Seven pieces, five on Ben Barek, two on Diagne. a) five on the unforgettable "black pearl"...For Pelé and Mekhloufi, he was the king...Before he was Franco-Moroccan, Larbi Ben Barek (1917-1992) was THE class. His country? "Soccer. As modest as he was genial and smiling, he played and won for several major Moroccan clubs, including Stade Français, Athlético de Madrid, OM and Les Bleus, winning 17 caps between 1938 and 1954 - a record 15 years and ten months! A film has been dedicated to him, but he deserves a bridge between Europe and Africa. I was lucky enough to spend two hours with him and our friend Max Urbini. a) three original photos, silver print: 1) in civilian clothes, and in the air, Nov 1933, 18x13; 2) at the window of the Bleus train, leaving the Gare du Nord, to play Belgium in Brussels, 13x18 (May 18, 1939, 3-1 victory for Les Bleus, a decisive pass from Larbi); 3) at a Red-Star-Athlético de Madrid match in Colombes, 26/12/48. Wearing Athlético's striped jersey with goalkeeper Domingo, they beat the Stade-Red Star team 2-0, in front of 17,000 spectators (18x13), two period captions on the back; b) N° 2 of "Nos Champions" 1955, a small 158p book, where Jacques de Ryswick's biography of Ben Barek (the pope of soccer), precedes the bios of swimmers Jany by Duchesne, and that of Alain Mimoun, by Gaston Meyer. In 8, paperback. Small stains; c) issue 25 of Jocko et Poustiquet, April 1955, with a stunning one-page comic strip on our champion by the great René Brantonne (1903-1979) and Saurel; d) two pieces on Diagne: a curiosity, the photo card of Louis Hon (Larbi's friend), published by Editions Raoul Diagne, Nice. Diagne (1910-2002), another of Larbi's buddies (they played together in the French team), was the first colored player in the blue jersey...in 1933...and therefore also a publisher; an original photo of Raoul in 1938 on the Tour!!!! In his bathing suit, he played water-carrier during the Grande Boucle's passage through Cavalaire. Traces of thumbtacks, corners damaged, average condition, but what a document, this compassionate Raoul with beret and cigarette in his mouth (16x21).
