Rugby/ Colombes/Du Manoir. Original historic photos (silver - Lot 363
Rugby/ Colombes/Du Manoir. Original historic photos (silver print, 10.5x16) of the two teams in the match: France-New South Wales (or Warathas, the name of a small local rose) of January 22, 1928. The two XVs are posed with their backs to the side (verso), and we can see that while the numbering of the French is classic (1 to 15), as is their position in the photo (3/4 in the foreground, seated, forwards standing, in the background), that of the visitors (traces of folds) is surprising, with numbers ranging from 1 to 29, via 17, 18, 21, 22 or 27....The Australian visitors, who had just beaten Ireland and Wales, but were beaten by the South-West in Bordeaux, triumphed by 11 to 8, despite the weariness of their tour. A special mention for France's number 3, prop Jean Morere (1902-1968), the Toulousain from Olympique de Marseille (you read that right). Indeed, this will be his 4th and last selection. He was sent off for violence against an opponent, a rare occurrence at the time. French champion with Stade Toulousain in 1926, this player from the same village as Dupont, the current scrum-half of the XV de France, was also a gifted baritone, who covered himself in glory in 39-45. This international match, played on a Sunday (a rarity in those days), took place in the Stade de Colombes, which for the first time bore the name of Yves du Manoir, who had died in flight 20 days earlier.
