Manufacture Dihl, attributed to, - Lot 477
Manufacture Dihl, attributed to, Napoleon as Caesar Two-tone hard porcelain bisque Paris, circa 1805 Height: 10.3 cm Napoleon is depicted as the Roman Emperor in profile to the left. This medallion bears the name of the engraver who created the model in the hollow of the neck: Andrieu. The vogue for two-tone porcelain cookies imitating British production was in full swing in France between 1800 and 1810. Sèvres and Parisian manufacturers such as Nast and Dihl offered their customers numerous models in groups, pendulum cabinets, cameos and... medallions. This depiction of Napoleon is specifically attributed to Dihl, as they produced cameos in the same format (a small and unusual 5 cm high portrait), presented in crystallo-ceramics. This type of medallion was more commonly produced in diameters of 8 to 8.5 centimeters by the Manufacture de Sèvres.
