Nasa. On June 19, 1976, the VIKING 1 space probe orbited Mars and sent back to Earth the first high-definition images of the planet's surface. These orthographic views were immediately printed by Nasa scientists in the form of small 12.7x13cm photographic squares (made from 50inch rolls). Each of these photographs contains scientific data useful to the scientists in the margins. They are the first detailed observations by man of the surface of an extraterrestrial planet. A month later, the VIKING 1 space probe dropped the VIKING 1 lander on Mars, giving mankind images of the planet as seen from the ground.period chromogenic print on "THIS PAPER MANUFACTURED BY KODAK" paper.
