NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Magnificent and rare observation of an exceptional solar flare. A long filament of solar material hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, erupted into space. The coronal mass ejection moved at over 900 miles per second. The coronal mass did not travel directly towards the Earth, but it did come into contact with the Earth's magnetic environment, or magnetosphere, causing auroras to appear on Earth a few days later.
