Set of three Ethiopian amharas magic scrolls Polychrome pigments on vellum Ethiopia, 19th century These therapeutic scrolls were supposed to ward off illness. The scroll itself was made up of various elements joined together to fit the size of the patient, and once recited, the prayers were supposed to ward off the disease, often represented in the center of the scroll by a figurative image. One is decorated with a saint fighting a demon, another with a cross. Two pages of a ge'ez manuscript decorated with various Christian scenes (saints, crowned Virgin, archangel and martyrs) are enclosed.
