Sculpture of a standing anthropomorphic figure - Lot 126
Sculpture of a standing anthropomorphic figure
Grey-green hard stone (Diorite?)
Height : 13,4 cm
Width: 5.3 cm
Thickness: 3.8 cm
Mezcala culture, ca. 400-100 B.C.
Guerrero state, Mexico
This type of figure belongs to a group of human representations found in the Mexican state of Guerrero. They have been dated to between 400 and 100 BC, with some uncertainty as to the proposed date. These sculptures have fascinated European and American artists since the 1930s.
Carlo Gay was the first to attempt to classify these stone figures, ranging from the most abstract (M1) to the most figurative (M26). Ours belongs to type M10, with its highly stylized appearance, where volumes and engraved lines delineate areas of the body and face. A very fine example.
Provenance: Henri Collection, Liège Years 70-80
