LOUIS XIII'S MARCH ON LA ROCHELLE, FOR THE SIEGE OF THE CITY 1628. - VILLEBERNIER (Maine-et-Loire) October 17, 1627. Receipt from Pierre BAUSELIN Laboureur of 60 livres tournois "to have repaired the roads and made several small culverts, from the ford to the town of Villebernier, for the passage of the King (LOUIS XIII) and his retinue to SAULMUR (Saumur) and to make a barrier around the passage of the fields and the exit of the ford, so that no one passes there but His Majesty and those of his retinue." - Vellum (11 x 30cm) oblong. a little yellowed. (On August 10, 1627, an army led by the King himself, accompanied by Cardinal Minister Richelieu, the Duke of Angoulême and Marshal de Bassompierre, invested La Rochelle, the most important of the towns given over to reform, the boulevard of Protestantism, as it was then called. On October 28, 1628, a convention was signed, stripping La Rochelle of all its privileges, and the following day a deputation came to present the inhabitants' submissions to Louis XIII.
