Favored by Mme de MAINTENON, CHAMILLARD was appointed to the French Ministry, where he proved to be an unqualified incompetent. Louis XIV, who had a great affection for him, was obliged to yield to public opinion; he withdrew the Charge de Contrôleur général (February 1708) then that of Secrétaire d'État à la Guerre (June 1709), and granted him a pension of 60,000 livres.
