BORDEAUX 1790. REVOLUTION. DISSOLUTION OF RELIGIOUS ORDERS. - Lot 211
BORDEAUX 1790. REVOLUTION. DISSOLUTION OF RELIGIOUS ORDERS. Autograph letter signed by Brother Ange MASSOTTE Discalced Carmelite, of BORDEAUX, Chartrain May 24, 1790. Addressed to Abbé ROVIRA Canon of the Cathedral, Grand Vicar, and Royal Professor of Theology at the University of PERPIGNAN. 2pp in-4°, wax seal at opening: "My dear and respectable Canon. In accordance with his promise, the Banker of Avignon has written to Rome to have 1260 Livres counted to settle an affair. He can consequently burn the Lettre de Change. He asks her to do him another silver service. He gives news from Bordeaux: "The Municipality has quietly and honestly made an inventory of all the religious communities of men (in order to confiscate them as Biens Nationaux). The inventory of the Daughters, Chapters and Secular Communities C will be carried out shortly. You will understand that my declaration was as I predicted in my last letter. I would add that "in our two communities here, we are all of the same mind. We have declared our desire to persevere with God's grace until death. It must be some time before the Clergy pronounce definitively. (They refuse to take the Oath to the Civil Constitution of the Clergy.) I am particularly anxious to know our fate... You have heard that fifteen hundred volunteers from here have left since Monday... to go and restore order in Montauban."
