The Austrians had retreated by the road to BASSANO; the Army followed them there, and continually attacked their rearguard.... We marched towards the BRENTA. The vanguard arrived just as the enemy was trying to destroy the bridge. There was a heavy cannonade from one bank to the other, which only the night put a stop to... I had several cavalry regiments ford the river, with the voltigeurs in croup, while the bridge was being repaired. The army soon marched on, and we arrived at CITTADELLA... At 5pm, we entered CASTELFRANCO... On our march from MONTEBELLO, we took over 1,800 prisoners. The division on the right has moved on to PADOUE,... the division on the left has moved on to BASSANO, which it will occupy tomorrow. The Army is marching on the PIAVE.
