Maréchal MARMONT (Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de) Maréchal d'Empire, Duc de Raguse (Châtillon-sur-Seine/ Côte d'Or 1774 - 1852) - Autograph letter signed "Le Mal Duc de Raguse", in Exile in VIENNE (Austria) on April 25, 1838, addressed to Mr le Comte de BIANCOURT in Paris (envelope enclosed). 3 pages in-4°: He learns of the death of the good and kind Valentin Esterhazy and then talks about his work: "The benevolent way in which the public received the publication of my voyage decided me to give them a supplement, the voyage to Sicily: united together by this pretty walk, my dear Count, I had to put us on stage and I hope you won't hold it against me. I also hope you'll approve of what I say about this country, which is generally so little known. This time spent with you and in your intimacy will always remain among my wonderful memories..." - Marmont then decided to embark on a series of journeys across Europe, and to publish his accounts. He visited Hungary (1832), Switzerland (1833), Italy (1833), Egypt, Turkey and Persia (1834-1835), Italy (1835), before returning to Vienna in 1836 to write and publish "Voyages du Duc de Raguse", published in 1837 and 1838.
