School of Salerno [VILLENEUVE, Arnaud de, MAGNINUS mediolans - Lot 7
School of Salerno [VILLENEUVE, Arnaud de, MAGNINUS mediolansis], CURIO, Johannes (editor): Conservandae sanitatis praecepta saluberrima : regi Angliae quondam a doctoribus Scholae Salernitanae versibus conscripta...bound following: HESSIUS: De tuenda bona valetudine . commentariis doctissimis à Ioanne Placotomo . Frankfurt, 1560. Frankfurt, 1559. Fort in-12 contemporary cold-stamped saddle-skin, clasps (some rubbing, one clasp missing). 12 ff, 279 pages and 1 blank ff for the first; 8ff and 160 pages for the second. A rare work, particularly precious for its illustrations: 63 woodcuts in the first volume, 22 in the second, in a popular German style. Some are mid-page genre scenes; others are smaller, depicting fruit, vegetables, herbs, poultry, fish, jugs, parts of the human body, scenes from rural life, etc. Of these illustrations, 11 are by Hans Sebald Beham. The other illustrations are by an artist who worked in Egenolf's studio (Oberlé 320 for another edition).
