VENDEE MILITAIRE - CANCLAUX (Jean-Batiste-Camille) (1740-1817) French general who was general-in-chief of the Armée de l'Ouest in 1793. He repulsed the Vendéens at Nantes, but was defeated at Torfou. Important LAS on the letterhead "Liberté égalité" dated Dijon 27 frimaire an 9 de la République, addressed to Alexandre Berthier, minisytre de la guerre. 1 1/2 pages in-folio. Handwritten text with autograph signature. Very fine letter concerning, among other things, his mission as Inspector General of mounted troops. General Canclaux was commander-in-chief of the Armée des Côtes de Brest in 1793. He victoriously defended Nantes against 80,000 Vendéens on June 29, 1793. He was commander of the Armée de l'Ouest in 1794, and defeated Charette (the great Vendéen leader) at Montaigne in 1794.
