Olympic Games/ summer, 1920/ Antwerp/ - Lot 58
Olympic Games/ summer, 1920/ Antwerp/
Three pieces:
a) the small Gold badge in its black plastic pouch, signed Bertoni: Games of The VIIth Olympiad, 1920, Gold, les anneaux d'or sur gerbe de blé... "2 cm. Rare;
b) Typed version of the Olympic report: Rapport Officiel des Jeux de la VIIè Olympiade, Anvers 1920. 174 pages, 28.5x22. As the official version is very, very rare (numbered copies in French), some people have fortunately seen fit to facilitate its distribution in this popular form. Later, Bill Mallon wrote a version much closer to the official canon;
c) It was in Antwerp that fencer Victor Boin took his first oath, and this bronze plaque by J.Witterwulghe was probably inspired by this first one... Left hand raised, the ancient athlete takes his oath... Laurels on his forehead, palm in his right hand, he is imposing. This plaque was still in use in 1936, as evidenced on the reverse by the words: ASCIB, champt Division 1, 1936. Perhaps soccer? 10X5.5. Joseph Witterwulghe (1883-1967) was a renowned Belgian artist, author of numerous sculptures and monuments, both funerary and otherwise.
