Olympic Games/Summer, 1956, 60, 64, 68/ Prestige boxed set p - Lot 165
Olympic Games/Summer, 1956, 60, 64, 68/ Prestige boxed set paying tribute to the eternal first quadruple Olympic champion in discus, American Al Oerter (1936-2007). Nicknamed "The Discobolus" because of his ability to synthesize the ancient symbols of purity of gesture and a full head, Al was the first man to win four titles in a row in a single speciality (his compatriot Carl Lewis joined him with his four titles in the long throw from 1984 to 1996): the discus throw (2kg).From Melbourne to Mexico City, via Rome and Tokyo, he always came out on top, in spite of setbacks, and raised his mark from 56.36m to 63.34m. He returned to competition to take part in the 1980 Moscow Games, but was prevented from doing so by the boycott! This boxed set is a pantheon, with a) his signed 1962 press photo (20x24); b) his long handwritten letter from 2002 (headed paper) in which he recounts in 22 lines a fine part of his fabulous story (date and signature, please) (29.7x21), c) his record, or one of his records (diam 21cm), signed "Olympic Gold 56, 60, 64, 68". We can still hear the whistle of the machine... His business card is attached, and a photo of him in action with signature and resume on the back (15x10). He was only 1m83 tall !!!
