NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Apollo 16 mission. Astronaut John W. Young, commander of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, works on the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) just before deployment of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) during the first spacewalk (EVA-1) on April 21, 1972. Note the ultraviolet (UV) camera/spectrometer to the right of the lunar module (LM) scale. Also note the stack of protective/thermal sheets under the American flag on the LM, which the astronauts removed to access the Modular Equipment Storage (MESA) bay. While astronauts Young and lunar module pilot Charles M. Duke Jr. descended aboard the Apollo 16 lunar module "Orion" to explore the Descartes Highlands landing site on the Moon, astronaut Thomas K. Astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, remained with the command and service module (csm) "Casper" in lunar orbit. April 21, 1972. later chromogenic print. Numbering on front.
