NASA. LARGE FORMAT. A beautiful photographic image of Algeria and the vastness of the Sahara desert. Along Algeria's northern coast, the rugged Atlas Mountains block moisture from the Mediterranean Sea (above) and prevent it from reaching the inland Sahara Desert. To the south of the mountains, several impermanent salt lakes appear in the form of greyish patches. Lines of sand dunes are visible in the orange sands of the eastern desert. April 2002.
