Nasa. Here, the HUBBLE telescope is observing a rare type of star whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen.Due to its low surface gravity, half the total mass of a carbon star can usually be lost to powerful stellar winds. As it begins to run out of fuel, it becomes unstable. Every few thousand years, it spits out a nearly spherical envelope of gas as a layer of helium around its core begins to melt. The gas ejected during the star's last eruption is clearly visible in this photo as a faint bubble of gas surrounding the star. Vintage chromogenic print. Label on back. 25.5 x 20.4cm with margins.
