MINES d'ANZIN (Nord) / File concerning the purchase by Mark de Jennings, general agent of Mines d'Anzin, of an English locomotive from the Stephenson workshops in Newcastle in 1835-36, it includes detailed invoices for the locomotive and transport by Wilson & Wilson as well as a banker's letter concerning payment (address and postage) / Mines d'Anzin had the project of creating a railway from Saint-Waast to Denain, they ordered 2 locomotives from the Stephenson workshops in England (the first locomotive builders); once the locomotives had been delivered, they were dismantled, studied and copied by the engineer Paul Castiaux, with modifications and improvements. The first locomotive thus left the Anzin yard in 1838 (named the Jean Froissart), followed by 4 others of the same type (one would be called the Jennings); the Saint-Waast line was inaugurated in 1839, the first wide-gauge railroad in France.
