GREECE - Miltiades CANELLOPOULO(Greek journalist and patriot - Lot 383
GREECE - Miltiades CANELLOPOULO(Greek journalist and patriot, editor-in-chief of the weekly "L'Indépendance Hellénique") / Autograph letter signed, 3 p in-8 (chipping at bottom),Athens, March 21, 1868, potentially addressed to Victor Hugo: He thanks his correspondent for the sympathy and interest "you are kind enough to show for my journal and, above all, for my homeland", "Greece always sees in you and your noble colleagues the successors of the illustrious men who have lent her their support and enlightenment", "You have been kind enough to give me your valuable advice on the questions I should preferably deal with in "l'Indépendance", "the one concerning the treaties of 1856 is beyond the ordinary abilities of obscure writers", he feels that his work lacks "that authority which is the prerogative of illustrious men who know how to find those invinciblearguments for which one forces, so to speak, the conviction of the reader, and whose social positiongives their word great weight", "If I could hope that my country, in the difficult circumstances in which it finds itself today, could obtain the distinguished honor of having you defend her cause in the columns of Independence, how grateful I would be for the great service you would have enabled me to render her, and how many more rights would you not thereby acquire to the recognition of Greece itself!" [It is quite likely that this letter was addressed to Victor Hugo- VH's correspondence includes several letters he wrote to Canellopoulo in 1868 - at least one of which, dated December 19, was reproduced in "L'Indépendance Hellénique" in 1868].
