Olympic Games/ Summer, 1906/ Athens. Superb volume in publis - Lot 80
Olympic Games/ Summer, 1906/ Athens. Superb volume in publisher's binding (25.5x17.5): "Burton Holmes, Travelogues, with Illustrations from Photographs by the Author, volume 3, 1920... "Here we have the reportage of an insatiable traveler-explorer of the belle époque, a combination of Albert Kahn for the photos and Albert Londres for the texts...Travelogues is untranslatable, but perhaps "peregrinations" comes close.Elias Burton Holmes was a frenetic traveler-photographer at a key moment in the history of the world... His wide-ranging explorations (Panama, Japan, China) are shared with us in 12 sumptuous volumes, including this one, the 3rd, in which we discover Greece, and in particular the intermediate Olympic Games of 1906....In just over 100 pages, the athletes, the stadium, the life around them, (many of) the champions parade by as Coubertin discovered them in 1896, for nothing has changed, and Louys and Burke from Boston also make an appearance among the spectators, a hurdle race, the winners' parades, the gymnastics competitions, where Archie Hahn...The royal family is there, as is the three-leaf clover of Canadian marathon winner Sherring....In 1896, our Burton was (it seems) there, and he saw Spiridon triumph, but it's essentially the atmosphere of the 1906 Games that we savor...The journey into deepest Greece, including Thessaly, continues over another 200 pages...A meticulous index allows us to find Garrett, Tricoupis, but alas, not Coubertin. Quite a dive into deep Greece...
