YONNE. SAINT FARGEAU Castle. Act of Foy and Homage of July 2 - Lot 50
YONNE. SAINT FARGEAU Castle. Act of Foy and Homage of July 27, 1629, by Philippe de COUSTAN of the Fief of Launay Griffoumière, to the Lord of SAINT-FARGEAU (Sic SAINT-FERGEAU). Passed before Simon SERCLES Notary in the Duchy of SAINT-FARGEAU: "... Sieur Philippe de COUSTAN, Sieur des Trois Quarts de l'Aulnay and Damoizelle BARBE DE COUSTAN his sister, Dame de l'autre quart dudit Fief having presented themselves at the gate of the Château de Saint-Fargeau, being on the sleeping bridge near the drawbridge, the gates being closed they knocked three different times on a cleat of the château which is attached to a nearby pillar, inasmuch as the drawbridge was raised, and at each of these asked aloud if monseigneur was here or otherwise for him having charge and power to receive his vassals and do the Foy and Hommage, and having appeared none, they each put a knee to the ground being the said écuyer; a head without belt, sword or spurs, and the said Demoiselle with her face uncovered... they have made to monseigneur the foy and homage they were bound and obliged to make to him because of their said Fief of La Griffonnière, ... which belongs to the Château of Saint Fargeau..." Parchment (26 x 32 cm) signed by the notary. Cabinet d'Hozier stamp. Attached is a small late 19th-century steel engraving, in-8° oblong, of the Château de Saint-Fargeau.
