Olympic Games/ Summer, 1904/ Saint-Louis/ Exposition Univers - Lot 17
Olympic Games/ Summer, 1904/ Saint-Louis/ Exposition Universelle/ Marathon/ Meursault/Corey/ Official award medal. Gilt bronze "Grand Prix" medal. Obverse: "Universal Exposition at Saint-Louis, United States of America, MCMIV"...Marianne and her spiritual daughter, young America, under the same flag". Reverse: "Grand Prize, Louisiana Purchase, Exposition...". The great American eagle, with its wings spread, protects the recipient, who can also count on two dolphins. Quite a rare piece, showing the Franco-American filiation, and the unexpected role of a somewhat rebellious runner... This marathon was so hectic, Corey seems to have been the only worthy competitor... Should we file a claim? 70 x 65 cm
