Olympic Games/ Summer, 1924/ Paris/ Hurdler. A superb hardwo - Lot 47
Olympic Games/ Summer, 1924/ Paris/ Hurdler. A superb hardwood jewelry box, the artist has carved a superb hurdler into the colored lid, near the engraved words "Olympiade de Paris 1924". Here he is on the hurdle, and it's a safe bet that Géo André (1889-1943) was the inspiration for this creation. He was the star of the French team, the flag-bearer, the champion chosen to take the oath, a double choice dictated by an extraordinary career and life: Olympic high jump vice-champion in London in 1908, decathlete, rugby international (13 times), war hero, bronze medallist at the Antwerp Games (4x400), he represented, at 34, the nobility of French sport. And in direct relation to this unique piece, Géo had failed to reach the foot of the podium (4th against 4 Americans) at the Antwerp Games in 1920, precisely in the 400m hurdles. Diameter: 9.5 cm, height: 5 cm.
