Part of a Veneto-Syrian incense burner - Lot 266
Part of a Veneto-Syrian incense burner Brass inlaid with silver Levant, 15th century, Mamluk period Diameter: 13.5 cm A group of spherical incense-burners of the same type has been studied by Sylvia Auld in: AULD S. (2004), Renaissance Venice, Islam and Mahmud the Kurd, a metalworking enigma, Altajir World of Islam Trust (London), pp. 108-140. Veneto-Saracenic" objects are metal objects probably produced in Egypt and Syria between the 14th and 16th centuries, but probably intended for export, since they feature European-influenced decorations and coats of arms (particularly Venetian). They bear witness to the many cultural and commercial exchanges between the Islamic world and Europe during the Renaissance. Expert: Alexis Renard
