American Bruce McCandless, performs an extravehicular activity (EVA) as he floats away from the space shuttle CHALLENGER (Mission STS-84) on February 11, 1984. This extraordinary photograph was taken from inside the aft flight deck of the US space shuttle. Using his hands to control his movements in space while operating the nitrogen-powered maneuvering unit (MMU). McCandless floats untethered to the shuttle. McCandless approaches the shuttle and is so close that the shuttle's reflection can be seen in McCandless's helmet. February 1984. Vintage chromogenic print. Numbering on front.
