NASA. Superb orbital observation (2/3) of Typhoon Yuri. Observed from the space shuttle ATLANTIS (Mission STS-44), the spectacular Typhoon Yuri began to form more than 1,000 miles off the coast of the Philippine Islands. In the background, we see terrestrial limbo at the junction of the Earth and the vacuum of space. The Typhoon's winds, which cause this impressive swirl of clouds around its eye, range from 145 to 170 miles per hour. November 1991.
