CÔTE-D'OR. Pierre DAUBENTON (Montbard/ Côte-d'Or 1703-1776) - Lot 158
CÔTE-D'OR. Pierre DAUBENTON (Montbard/ Côte-d'Or 1703-1776) Lawyer, one of the contributors to the Encyclopédie. Brother of Louis DAUBENTON - Letter A.S. MONTBARD, January 11, 1743, addressed to Mr BERNARD Peintre, rue du Petit Potet, DIJON: "I knew, my dear Sir, from Mr VARENNE that you were in Dijon, I have searched everywhere, Sir, and I have asked MANESSY DE FLAMBERT and the Gardener where the bottle of varnish you lost could be, but they all assure me that they have not seen it and that they have only found under the Colombier staircase what you found in the Tour Saint Louis, and the gardener assures us that nothing could have been diverted because before abandoning the Dovecote to the workmen, he squeezed everything that was there into the lower part of the Tour Saint Louis. I am much obliged to you, Monsieur, for having made known to Mr de VASSY the current state of our marbles, and when he wishes to approach us, we will give him a good composition. We are very busy... as our marbles take the road to Lyon, I have done business with Mr. THOMAS from Châlons, who last ordered ten tables for a café in Lyon. SERVAN also sent twelve tables, which we delivered? Here's PALLUET who writes to me for a lot of rough marble. ... Madame has had double tables made... her work has been delayed by the frosts which have prevented the sawyers from working. An architect from Paris has just sent us models of the edges of eight fireplaces... La Coquille, Monsieur, is now with PALLUET, and if you could renew your relationship with the Carthusian monks who asked for it, you would be master of the price...". (The Tour Saint-Louis de MONTBARD, remodeled by Buffon in the 18th century, housed the famous naturalist's summer study, laboratory and library).
