Comte d'ESTERHAZY (Valentin, Stanislas) 1740 - 1805, Colonel - Lot 258
Comte d'ESTERHAZY (Valentin, Stanislas) 1740 - 1805, Colonel of a Hussar Regiment. In March 1770, he was commissioned to go to Vienna to bring MARIE-ANTOINETTE the Portrait of the Dauphin (future Louis XVI) for their wedding. He became one of the Queen's closest confidants for 20 years. He was Governor of ROCROY and Maréchal de Camp. He emigrated with the King's brothers - Autograph letter signed from the Château de VERSAILLES, May 27, 1780. 1page in-4°; "Monsieur le Prince de Montbarrey is aware of the Comte d'ESTEHAZY's position at Rocroi (Ardennes), and desiring to go there to see Mr le Comte DE BROGLIE who is going there on the 8th of next month, he asks him to send him the letters of Commandment purely and simply, hoping that this request will not change any of the views he may have of him elsewhere, and the letter will be an approval he hopes to obtain from his friendship. V. ESTEHAZY."
