SEINE-ET-MARNE. 1789. Baron DESPATYS DE COURTEILLES Pierre É - Lot 332
SEINE-ET-MARNE. 1789. Baron DESPATYS DE COURTEILLES Pierre Étienne, Avocat, Député du Tiers aux États-Généraux de 1789 par le Bailliage de MELUN (Clamecy/ Nièvre 1753 - Melun/ Seine-et-Marne 1841). Autograph letter signed "De COURTEILLES", in VERSAILLES on May 21, 1789, addressed to Mr CABARET procureur au parlement in Paris. 2 pages in-8°: "It has not been possible for me, sir, to deal with my case against Dufflot. No sooner had you handed me the documents than I received the letter of Convocation for the Estates-General. All my time has been absorbed since then by the preliminaries and the holding of the assemblies of my Bailliage, the dispatch of all the causes and lawsuits to my report that have remained behind, and the arrangements for my establishment in Versailles, where I have been since the 25th of last month. I cannot put you in a position to comply with Mr Bourgeois' summons, but I do not think he will insist once you have made the above statement and observed that no foreclosure can be given against a Deputy to the Estates-General. If he does not accept these reasons, the community will surely adopt them. In any event, it can only condemn you to hand over the documents by granting you a delay... I don't intend to leave here, where I have all my people, and they shouldn't demand that I make a trip to MELUN on purpose."
