REVOLUTION 1789. VERSAILLES. 2 Autograph letters signed by - Lot 336
REVOLUTION 1789. VERSAILLES. 2 Autograph letters signed by Jean Louis PAYS, Coachman for Monsieur de SIEURAC, King's Physician at the Vénerie in VERSAILLES, to his Father, a laborer in SANSAC near LE PUY-EN-VELAY (Haute-Loire). He gives him news of the events he has experienced in Versailles: Letter from Versailles on June 28, 1789. "Mon Père... Yesterday the 27th. The Nobility and Clergy met with the Third Estate, and worked together. When the people heard about it, they flocked to the Château, the King (Louis XVI) and the Queen (Marie-Antoinette) appeared on the balcony, everyone shouted Vive le Roi et la Reine. The King seemed enchanted, the Queen was moved to tears, and the people wept with joy, finally all was well and God be blessed. Bread here is worth 44 sous per 12 livres and the rest of the food is very expensive, which is why work is not going well and misery is great, but we must hope that this will come to an end...". + Letter from Versailles, July 15, 1789. "My Father... Today at noon, the King (Louis XVI) went to the National Assembly, he agreed to everything he had done, and he signed it, so everything is well at present, we have nothing more to fear; the King agrees to everything. He returned to the Château accompanied only by the deputies and the people, not a single bodyguard. We shouted Vive le Roi with the greatest force. The King himself wept with joy. You can imagine that the people were crying too. I beg you to share this good news with all your friends and neighbors, and my compliments to my brothers and sisters..."
