TAKING OF THE BASTILLE. "National Assembly. Séance XVI. Jour - Lot 337
TAKING OF THE BASTILLE. "National Assembly. Séance XVI. Journal du Jeudi 16 Juillet 1789, printed by Gueffier jeune, quai des Augustins, 8 pages in-8°: "What a century we live under... This legitimate insurrection, this necessary armament, produces only an instant of disorder. The most profound calm reigns in the midst of bayonets and muskets; virtuous citizens... place order in the midst of anarchy... In the space of two hours, the flag of Liberty, buried for so many centuries in the muddy dungeons of the Bastille, has flown in the capital; and in place of the streams of blood that have flooded this city for centuries, we have seen the heads of two or three traitors rolling in the mire. ... Mr. Comte de Lally-Tollendal recounted this interesting scene at the opening of the session, and everyone present was moved to tears. All the streets, all the paths, the Hôtel-de-ville of Paris, resounded with the words: Vive la Nation Française, Vivent les Représentants de la Nation, Vive le Roi (Louis XVI)... Mr de Mirabeau had proposed a decree to the Assembly, which, in accordance with M. Barnave's motion, asked the King to expel the new ministers...". Attached is a small in-8° engraving, from 1789: "Vue intérieure de la démolition de la Bastille."
