MONTMARTRE. Paul-Eugène MESPLÈS, Montmartre figure of the Be - Lot 583
MONTMARTRE. Paul-Eugène MESPLÈS, Montmartre figure of the Belle époque, nicknamed "the Painter of the Dancers", engraver and musician (1849 - 1924) - Autograph letter signed, DIEPPE (Seine-Maritime), August 1884. 1 page (18 x 23): "very dear friend... I had intended to go for a walk in London this week. I will postpone this walk to shake your hand. I work a lot and need it very much... and even in this connection I wrote to GIL BLAS that I had made and exhibited opposite the Casino several studies of types and dwellings in the POLLET (Dieppe's historic POLLET district) which is to be demolished in October and whose old streets have enchanted all Artists. If you can get a word in edgewise, in the Écho de Paris or any other chic canard, I'd be delighted. So see you soon, dear Godfather, and all yours. MERPLÈS."
